Chatham County is not only a good place to live, but also a great place for recreation and relaxation.  As the home of Jordan Lake State Recreation Area and the Haw, Deep and Rocky Rivers, Chatham County residents and visitors have ready access to an abundance of beautiful natural resources.

In the late 1960s, the US Army Corps of Engineers constructed the B. Everett Jordan Dam and Lake to provide a water supply, flood and water quality control, and fish and wildlife conservation for surrounding cities.Today, Jordan Lake also provides a popular source of recreation for boating, swimming, fishing, camping, hiking, and nature education.The North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation maintains nine recreation areas with over 1,000 total camping sites, public boat launches and swimming areas, and a newly constructed Exhibit Hall and Visitors Center.Located near the Research Triangle Park, Jordan Lake is a popular weekend destination for visitors throughout North Carolina and serves over 1 million people per year.

The Haw, Deep, and Rocky Rivers run through Chatham County, providing residents and visitors with opportunities for hiking, paddling, fishing, and nature watching. The Haw River Trail, a 110 mile land and water based eco-tourism trail through historic mill towns, connects the Triad and Triangle and preserves natural habitat and water quality in the Haw River watershed.In Chatham County, the southern portion of the Haw River Trail connects with the Deep River, where a similar State Trail was authorized in 2007. When both river trails are complete, Chatham County will be one of the most centrally located ecotourism destinations in North Carolina. Chatham County also has a growing network of pedestrian and bicyclist friendly trail networks.A portion of the American Tobacco Trail connects Chatham County with trail networks in Durham and Wake Counties, creating a major recreational resource in a fast-growing tourism region.As the Triangle and North Carolina Rails to Trails programs complete additional segments, Chatham County will be centrally located within a state-wide network of trails.

Within the county, bicycle routes connect Chatham’s large and small communities for local and visiting bicycling enthusiasts.Finally, the Town of Pittsboro is in the final stages of approving a pedestrian network plan to increase pedestrian access between the county seat and new developments.Chatham County also has several public parks which provide athletic and picnic facilities for local use.

Finally, Chatham County has five highly acclaimed public and private golf courses, as well as a close proximity to North Carolina's nationally renowned courses at Pinehurst and Southern Pines.
